You are the author. AI is your assistant. Amber Copilot never writes for you—it helps you refine what YOU’VE written. Your words, your voice, your intellectual property. Always.
Two Modes
Chat Mode - Ask questions, brainstorm ideas, and discuss your writing- Quick Chat (
⌘L) for instant feedback on selected text - Full Conversation mode for comprehensive project discussions
- Control what context the AI sees (entire workspace, current section, notes only, or selected text)
- Preserve conversation history across sessions
- Select text and describe what you want to change
- See exactly what will change before accepting
- Accept, reject, or ask for alternatives for each change
- Fully reversible through undo or Git history
Using Sources
Store detailed reference materials that inform Copilot’s understanding:- Character backstories and voice notes
- World-building documents (magic systems, geography, politics)
- Research material and plot outlines
- Inspirational passages and style examples
Steering Your Copilot with amber.md
Create anamber.md file in your workspace root to guide how Copilot assists you. Instead of configuring through menus, write markdown instructions about:
- Your writing style and tone
- Character voices and consistency rules
- Plot constraints and world-building rules
- How you want AI to help
amber.md take effect immediately—no restart needed.
Best Practices
For Chat Mode
- Use “Entire Workspace” scope when brainstorming plot
- Use “Current Section” scope for feedback on one scene
- Be specific in your questions
- Reference your Sources: “Based on Elena’s backstory, how would she…”
For Editor Mode
- Be specific about what you want: “Make this more vivid” vs “Fix this”
- Reference your steering file: “Make this sound like Elena (see amber.md)”
- Start with smaller edits—iterate toward what you want
- Keep major plot and character decisions in your hands
Privacy & Safety
- Optional local processing: Choose between local or cloud AI models
- Local models: All processing stays on your device
- Cloud models: Document content sent to Google’s servers for processing (you choose)
- You approve all changes before applying
- Full undo available (
⌘Z) if you change your mind - See Privacy & Data for details on data handling
